The Girl and The Moa: a Serial Historic Fiction Tale -written by Quillian
Chapter 1:
Once upon at time a girl named Glory was born on a sailboat. The boat was going to "Where-the-Whales-Came-From" and coming from the Pacific Island Nations. Glory's people were trying to get to a place, a new homeland, where they could raise their children in peace. The truth was that the people of some of the island nations were being hunted by the great white sharks! So they were trying to find a safe homeland. Glory was raised on small islands and sailboats. On the way they kept stopping to get more food, so by the time they go to "Where-the-Whales-Came-From" eight years had passed since Glory was last on the beaches of her home. It was quite a surprise to see all the trees when they landed.
At first she was loud and clumsy but after a week or so she got the hang of swinging and climbing. She was the first of the tribe to learn it, so it was very easy to sneak off and go explore. That is what she did. The second time she went out she stumbled upon a HUGE BIRD! At first she was scared, but when it looked up she saw that is was curious, not mad. She was so scared that she couldn't move, so she said, "Hi," instead of running. The bird gave Glory a weird look and strutted a little closer.
He said, "Hhhoooonnnnkk!"
Glory fell over laughing. The bird ran over to her and laid down beside her. The bird started honking and walking away.
Glory said, "You want me to follow you?"
It honked its "yes".
On the way to wherever they were going, Glory tried to teach the bird how to talk. Glory said, "Glory, me" and pointed to herself.
The bird said, "Glosha, ma".
Then Glory said, "No, Glory, me!"
The bird said stubbornly, "Glosha, you."
Glory said, "Fine you can call me Glosha"
By the time they go to a massive and beautiful tree Glory had the bird saying "food," "help," and "Moona" (which must be his name).
"Let's meet back at the stream tomorrow morning," said Glory.
Moona honked in agreement and walked away.
Glory and Moona :) Hhhhooonnkk! I too chuckled at this place in the story. Thanks for the delight!
